Exploring Tabarca Island
A haven for pirates in years of old, Tabarca is the largest and the only inhabited island belonging to the Community of Valencia and was declared a protected marine reserve and bird sanctuary in 1986. The island is approximately 1,800 metres long and 400 metres wide with a mixture of sandy beaches, coves and cliffs. The climate is mild and the water clear, making it ideal for snorkeling and water sports. Places of interest include a museum, old fort, lighthouse, San Pedro and San Pablo churches and Casa del Gobernador ( Governor’s House ) The island is renowned for it’s seafood restaurants and offers a delicious choice of speciality seafood dishes. Restaurant prices are a bit higher than on the mainland but well worth the extra cost. For those on a tight budget, it is advisable to take along a cooler bag which also gives visitors the freedom to enjoy their lunch anywhere on the island.
