Nativity Scene Torrevieja

January 8, 2009

We all know Nativity Scenes… a crib, Maria, Joseph and a baby Jesus. In Spain it is called Belen, but you will find it a little more elaborate, as it depicts the whole town of Bethlehem. Our traditional Belen in Torrevieja has never failed to impress and was again visited by hundreds of people each day in December.

It is located in the Plaza de la Constitution, in front of the Town Hall.
The scene creates a visual narrative of Jesus’ life, commencing with the Virgin Mary’s heavenly vision of the Angel Gabriel and ensuing Immaculate Conception, and continuing with the long journey to Bethlehem, and Jesus’ birth in the stable. The display is alive with activity, featuring a variety of automated parts, such as smoke billowing from fires and chimneys and water flowing freely in springs and falls, to make the effect all the more authentic. Although the Belen can be appreciated during the daytime, it is all the more spectacular by night, when the neat houses and streets are aglow with flickering lamps and candles.
